Linguistic Landscapes in the Stockholm Archipelago—Producing and Reflecting a Sense of Place

This article takes a look at the linguistic landscapes of Stockholm archipelago with aim to discuss if, and how, specific sense place is produced or reflected in signs, building on Lefebvre’s concept social spaces. Signs collected from two islands, Nämdö Svartsö, are used qualitative analysis. Firstly, construction such (rural) landscape discussed, focusing languages as well emplacement general functions signs. Secondly, closer some examples provides insight into signs that speaking locals visitors. The analysis shows almost exclusively made up Swedish. Functionally, variety different can be found, partly centred by local businesses, bulletin boards, but many information instructions also found throughout landscape. Examples addressing both permanent residents visitors identified, reflect more organic places, not overly touristic ones.
